2341 charsBank of Albania Presents First Draft of Green Taxonomy with European Investment Bank Support
On April 22, 2026, the Bank of Albania, in collaboration with the European Investment Bank (EIB), hosted a technical and inter-institutional workshop to advance the development of Albania's Green Taxonomy. The initiative forms part of the EIB's technical assistance programme supporting the green transition of financial systems and represents a significant milestone towards establishing a framework to guide sustainable investment across the Albanian economy.
The Green Taxonomy aims to enhance transparency in financial markets, channel capital towards sectors supporting sustainable development, and strengthen long-term financial stability. The workshop convened representatives from public institutions, international organisations, the financial sector, the business community, and environmental organisations to present and discuss the first draft.
Natasha Ahmetaj, Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Albania, emphasised the taxonomy's importance as a key instrument for steering investments toward sustainable activities and aligning Albania's development standards with those of the European Union. She highlighted the inter-institutional collaboration underpinning the draft's preparation and noted the taxonomy's role in shaping climate information architecture, strengthening financial stability, and aligning with national climate and environmental objectives. The Deputy Governor underscored that the workshop serves as a consultation platform to gather technical feedback from stakeholders and support effective implementation.
The workshop comprised two roundtable sessions. The first brought together senior officials and technical groups from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economy and Innovation, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, the Bank of Albania, and the Albanian Financial Supervisory Authority (AFSA). The second session engaged representatives from the banking sector, regulated professions, large corporations, environmental organisations, and chambers of commerce to gather feedback for document finalisation.
Following the consultation process, the taxonomy is expected to be finalised, with inter-institutional cooperation formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding to support effective implementation in Albania.
