TITLE: Idaho Department of Finance Joins Multistate Settlement with Mortgage Servicer NewRez BODY: On August 24, 2026, the Idaho Department of Finance, along with 48 state financial agencies across 47 states, reached a $15.5 million settlement with NewRez LLC (NMLS ID 3013), a major mortgage servicer operating in Idaho under the name Shellpoint Mortgage Servicing. The settlement resolves violations related to the improper imposition of force-placed insurance on borrowers who already maintained active homeowners' insurance policies. A multistate examination discovered that NewRez had improperly imposed force-placed insurance on more than 4,200 borrowers nationwide, causing consumer harm totalling more than $4.5 million. Under the settlement terms, NewRez will pay $15.5 million in total, comprising approximately $4.5 million in restitution to affected borrowers and nearly $11 million in penalties and costs. In Idaho specifically, NewRez refunded $22,419.20 to 16 borrowers, averaging approximately $1,400 per affected homeowner. Idaho's share of penalties and costs totals $84,016.09. Salvador Cruz, Director of the Idaho Department of Finance, said the settlement demonstrates the company's acknowledgment of errors and commitment to correction, ensuring Idaho borrowers do not bear the financial burden. NewRez must implement enhanced monitoring for loans with force-placed insurance and strengthen internal controls. Force-placed insurance, typically significantly more expensive than consumer-secured policies, is imposed when a homeowner's policy is cancelled, delinquent, or insufficient in coverage. Federal mortgage servicing rules require servicers to provide written notice at least 45 days before charging for force-placed insurance, with a reminder at least 15 days prior. Borrowers who provide proof of existing coverage during this window should not be charged. Affected borrowers have already received reimbursement with no claim form, filing deadline, or associated fees. Idaho residents with questions may contact the Department of Finance at (208) 332-8000 or file a complaint at finance.idaho.gov/complaint-guidance.
