TITLE: United Kingdom Competition and Markets Authority Proposes Removing 27 Market Remedies Following Strategic Review
BODY:
On August 12, 2026, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) published its provisional decision following a strategic review of 33 market remedies currently in place across the United Kingdom. The CMA is consulting on proposals to remove 23 measures entirely, partially remove 4 measures, and retain 6 in full.
Market remedies are designed to address competition problems identified during market investigations. The CMA's review examined 60 percent of all market remedies currently in place, focusing on measures that may no longer be necessary due to changes in regulation, technology, or consumer behaviour. The 23 remedies proposed for full removal include those relating to extended warranties on domestic electrical goods, package holidays and tour operators, and on-air promotion of magazines published or sold by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The four measures proposed for partial removal relate to retail banking, home credit, private motor insurance, and certain soft drinks, with the CMA retaining requirements that continue to protect consumers and promote competition. The six remedies retained in full concern current account switching services, local bus services, two measures relating to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply for domestic heating, and two measures relating to soft drinks.
Juliette Enser, CMA Executive Director of Enforcement and Markets, said the review reflects the authority's commitment to ensuring market interventions deliver meaningful benefits while reducing unnecessary burdens on businesses. The CMA is inviting interested parties to submit responses to MarketsRemediesStrategicReview@cma.gov.uk by 5:00pm on September 11, 2026. The CMA expects to reach its final decision in Autumn 2026.
