TITLE: Arizona Department of Gaming Opens Applications for Limited Event Wagering Licenses

On July 14, 2026, the Arizona Department of Gaming (Department) announced that it will begin accepting applications for limited event wagering licenses starting August 13, 2026. Limited event wagering licenses allow operators to partner with racetracks or additional wagering facilities holding permits issued by the Division of Racing, commonly known as off-track betting locations. The Department may issue up to ten licenses at ten specific locations, as described in A.R.S. § 5-1307.
The application window runs from August 13, 2026 to August 27, 2026 at 5 p.m. Arizona Time. Applicants must submit completed applications within this timeframe to be considered for licensure. The Department will evaluate all applications in accordance with established criteria set forth in applicable rules and statutes, with a focus on consumer protection. Cliff Holden, Assistant Director of Certification and Licensing for the Department, said the licensing evaluation process is "structured to ensure consumer protection."
Since legal event wagering and sports betting launched in Arizona in 2021, participants have wagered $34.6 billion, generating approximately $185.8 million in event wagering privilege fees for the state. Limited event wagering operations will enable Arizonans to participate in retail-style sports betting at racetracks, with eight percent of adjusted retail event wagering revenue subject to event wagering privilege fees, generating ongoing monthly revenue for the state.
