TITLE: New Hampshire Joins Multistate Settlement with Block Inc. Over Cash App Deceptive Practices BODY: On July 9, 2026, the New Hampshire Department of Justice announced a $45 million multistate settlement with Block, Inc., the company operating the peer-to-peer payments application Cash App. The settlement resolves allegations that Block misled consumers about Cash App's safety, failed to protect users from fraud, and did not provide the fraud protection and resolution it promised and was required by law. New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella led the bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general in the investigation. The investigation found that Block's business practices facilitated fraud, including a sign-up process with limited identity verification that enabled fraudsters to create accounts easily; the absence of live telephone customer support for years, which led consumers to contact fake numbers operated by scammers; and the "Cash App Fridays" social media campaign that encouraged users to publicly share their $cashtag, which fraudsters exploited to trick users into providing login credentials. Block continued this promotion despite knowing about the scams. Additionally, consumers whose accounts were locked after suspicious activity often waited weeks for access to their funds, and fraud victims frequently could not recover stolen funds because Block failed to promptly investigate unauthorized transactions or provide refunds as required by law. Under the settlement terms, Block has agreed to maintain customer support capable of resolving fraud complaints and account lockouts, provide live customer support 24 hours daily (including phone support at least 13.5 hours daily and online chat at least 18 hours daily), end false or misleading claims about Cash App's safety, discontinue marketing practices that increase fraud risks, provide consumer education about fraud schemes, and fulfill legal obligations to investigate fraud claims and reimburse users. New Hampshire receives $338,788.27 from the settlement. Block has also committed to distributing between $75 million and $120 million to compensate consumers nationwide through a separate Consumer Financial Protection Bureau settlement.
