TITLE: European Commission Presents Action Plan on Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence BODY: On July 7, 2026, the European Commission presented an Action Plan addressing the risks and opportunities posed by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models in cybersecurity. The plan establishes a structured response to emerging cyber threats while leveraging the European Union's (EU) existing legal frameworks for AI and cybersecurity. Advanced AI models are reshaping the cybersecurity landscape, presenting both opportunities and significant risks. The Commission identified that AI can be misused to identify vulnerabilities, automate attacks, and increase the scale and speed of cyber incidents at unprecedented levels. The Action Plan aims to strengthen the cybersecurity of the EU's digital landscape against vulnerabilities posed by advanced AI by bringing together Member States, industry, and EU-level organisations. Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, said the EU must keep pace with AI's transformation of cybersecurity. She emphasised that the EU has strong foundations in place to adapt its response to vulnerabilities emerging from new technologies, and must harness and focus existing capabilities, networks, and the legal framework to fortify cybersecurity protecting the digital landscape. The Action Plan builds on the EU's unique legal framework for AI and cybersecurity, positioning the bloc to address evolving threats while maintaining its regulatory leadership. The initiative represents a coordinated approach to ensuring that advanced AI technologies strengthen rather than undermine the security of critical digital infrastructure across the EU.
