TITLE: Brazil's Senate Approves Bill Creating Automated Pension Payment System via Pix

On July 7, 2026, Brazil's Federal Senate (Senado Federal) approved legislation creating an automated pension payment system known as "Pix Pensão." The bill, Project Law 4,978/2023 (PL 4.978/2023), originally introduced by Deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB-SP), was reported in the Senate by Senator Ana Paula Lobato (PSB-MA) and now proceeds to the President for signature.
The Pix Pensão system automates monthly alimony payments directly to beneficiaries' accounts at any stage of sentence enforcement. Currently, alimony can only be automatically deducted from a debtor's salary if they have formal employment; otherwise, beneficiaries must return to court for each missed payment. The new system addresses this gap by requiring judges to provide financial institutions with necessary payment details, including monthly payment amounts, obligation duration, debit and credit accounts, and value adjustment criteria. If insufficient funds exist in the payer's account, financial institutions may automatically freeze assets up to the outstanding payment amount, including assets linked to self-employed business activities. Frozen assets may be converted to judicial seizure if non-payment continues.
The legislation also requires Brazil's National Council of Justice (Conselho Nacional de Justiça) to collect and publish anonymised statistics on judicial activity, including case volumes, average case values, judicial seizure information, and beneficiary profiles in alimony cases. The Council may establish cooperation mechanisms with other public bodies, subject to Brazil's General Personal Data Protection Law (Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados Pessoais), to share aggregated or anonymised data for statistical development and public policy improvement.
Senator Lobato stated the measure creates continuous pension payment flow, reducing repeated judicial requests and increasing financial predictability for beneficiaries. The bill now requires presidential signature to become law.
