TITLE: Uganda's National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board Seizes 169 Illegal Gaming Machines in West Nile Enforcement Operation
BODY:
On May 29, 2026, the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) announced a targeted enforcement operation across Uganda's West Nile region that resulted in the seizure of 169 illegal gaming machines operating without requisite licenses and regulatory approval. The operation covered 20 districts and municipalities including Arua city, Maracha, Koboko, Nebbi, and Pakwach.
The NLGRB, established under the Lotteries and Gaming Act No. 7 of 2016, conducted the enforcement drive to address unlicensed gaming operations that violate Uganda's gaming laws. Illegal gaming equipment poses significant risks to communities, including exposure of minors and vulnerable individuals to unregulated practices, denial of consumer protections, and promotion of irresponsible gaming behaviour. The NLGRB identified that such operations undermine fair and transparent gaming environments and erode public confidence in the regulated sector.
The Board emphasised that operating gaming equipment without a license constitutes a clear violation of gaming legislation. The enforcement action supports the NLGRB's statutory mandate to regulate, supervise, and enforce gaming laws while protecting the public from harmful gaming practices. The Board urged all gaming operators to ensure their equipment, premises, and activities hold full licenses and comply with regulatory requirements, including regular verification of license status and adherence to established standards.
The NLGRB also called upon the public to report illegal gaming activities within their communities to strengthen enforcement efforts. The Board remains committed to continuous inspections, targeted enforcement operations, stakeholder engagement, and public awareness campaigns to uphold the integrity of Uganda's gaming sector and advance responsible gaming nationwide.
