TITLE: National Institute of Standards and Technology Expands Artificial Intelligence Consortium's Scope and Membership BODY: On May 29, 2026, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the expansion and rebranding of its AI-focused consortium. The organization renamed the former AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC) as the NIST Artificial Intelligence Consortium to reflect the group's newly expanded goals and mission. While the consortium will continue previous work, it will now concentrate on AI measurement, innovation and adoption, with particular focus on building an AI evaluation ecosystem, investing in AI-enabled science and promoting the use of U.S.-developed AI technology and systems. NIST established the original consortium in 2023, bringing together more than 280 organizations to develop science-based and empirically backed guidelines and standards for AI measurement. The reorientation aligns with NIST's Strategy for American Technology Leadership in the 21st Century and implements directives under the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020, Executive Order 14179 (2025), and America's AI Action Plan. The reorganized consortium will operate through six task groups: the AI Testing, Evaluation, Verification and Validation (AI TEVV) Zero Draft Task Group; the Annotation for AI Risks & Validity Task Group; the AI Evaluation and Measurement Methods Task Group; the Bias Effects and Notable Generative AI Limitations (BENGAL) Group; the AI Documentation Cards Task Group; and the restarted Chemical and Biological Security Task Group. Deputy NIST Director Craig Burkhardt said the expansion aims to "encourage more extraordinary AI technological innovations" by "harnessing the broader community's interests and capabilities." NIST is inviting letters of interest from technically capable organizations wishing to join the consortium. The agency will select participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Existing members must sign an amendment agreeing to the consortium's changes. Member organizations will enter into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with NIST. Details on submitting letters of interest are available on the project website and in the Federal Register notice.
