The ministry identified a growing phenomenon known as "brand spoofing" on the Czech market, whereby unlicensed entities create websites that mimic the official environments of licensed and legal gambling operators.
These fraudulent sites replicate legitimate betting shops and online casinos by mimicking their visual appearance, including logos, colours, and layout; creating similar uniform resource locators (URLs) with minor variations in domain names; and attempting to harvest login credentials. The ministry confirmed that several brands of legitimate operators active on the Czech market have already been exploited in this manner.
Participating in games operated by entities without valid Ministry of Finance authorisation presents serious risks, including loss of deposited funds, absence of legal protection, non-payment of winnings, identity theft, and compromise of accounts at legitimate operators. When fraudsters obtain login credentials, they can gain control of user accounts, misappropriate funds, alter security settings, and misuse personal data. Risk increases significantly when users employ identical credentials across multiple online services.
The Ministry of Finance recommends players exercise heightened caution when entering login credentials, particularly regarding links distributed through advertising banners, social media, discussion forums, or unsolicited messages. The safest access method involves manually entering the operator's address into a web browser or using verified saved bookmarks. Should users suspect they have entered credentials on a fraudulent website, the ministry advises immediately changing passwords, contacting customer support of the relevant legitimate operator, and reviewing transaction and account access history.
