TITLE: Sweden's Financial Supervisory Authority Publishes Financial Stability and Preparedness Report BODY: On May 20, 2026, Finansinspektionen (FI), Sweden's financial supervisory authority, published its Financial Stability and Preparedness Report (2026:1), assessing the resilience of the Swedish financial system and the financial sector's crisis readiness. FI concluded that the Swedish financial system remains stable, though geopolitical tensions and rapid technological advancement present emerging risks. The conflict in the Middle East has increased the probability of deeper recession, rising inflation, and higher interest rates in Sweden, which could pressure highly indebted households and non-financial corporations and increase credit losses in the banking sector. Swedish banks maintain significant exposure to commercial real estate firms, many of which are highly indebted with short fixed interest-rate terms and high vacancies. However, major Swedish banks possess substantial capital and liquidity buffers and maintain good profitability, providing resilience to such scenarios. Recent global financial market volatility could weaken the financial position of Swedish life insurance undertakings and occupational pension undertakings, though both maintain strong solvency positions. FI identified artificial intelligence development as enhancing operational risks and potentially making financial sector risks more complex and difficult to assess. FI has strengthened the financial sector's crisis preparedness through multiple initiatives. The authority published planning guidance for financial firms, established a new private-public collaboration structure, categorized firms critical to total defence, developed situational awareness capabilities, and conducted exercises to enhance crisis management capacity. The Swedish government proposed establishing a new operational crisis management function for the financial sector effective July 1, 2026, under Swedish Riksbank leadership, comprising FI, the Swedish National Debt Office, and certain financial firms.
