This update concerns EU sanctions and restrictive measures against Myanmar, which falls outside the payments compliance taxonomy entirely.
While asset freezes involve financial accounts, this is a geopolitical sanctions measure unrelated to payments regulation, products, or services.
Specialism
The update explicitly extends EU sanctions (asset freezes, travel bans, prohibitions on providing funds) against Myanmar entities and individuals, which directly involves restrictive measures and transaction screening obligations for financial institutions.
Low confidence — requires human review. While the sanctions regime involves asset freezes and fund prohibitions that payment firms must implement, the update is primarily a geopolitical/foreign policy announcement rather than a payments-specific regulatory change.

TITLE: European Union Extends Restrictive Measures Against Myanmar Until April 2027
BODY:
On 27 April 2026, the Council of the European Union decided to prolong its restrictive measures against Myanmar for a further twelve months, extending them until 30 April 2027. The decision was taken following an annual review of the sanctions regime and in response to the continuing grave situation in Myanmar, including actions undermining democracy and serious human rights violations.
The EU restrictive measures currently apply to 105 individuals and 22 entities. Those listed are subject to an asset freeze, with prohibitions on providing them with funds or economic resources, either directly or indirectly. A travel ban to the European Union applies to all natural persons listed. As a result of the annual review, the Council removed one deceased individual from the sanctions list.
Additional EU restrictive measures remain in place, including an embargo on arms and equipment; export restrictions on equipment for monitoring communications that might be used for internal repression; an export ban on dual-use goods for use by the military and border guard police; and prohibitions on military training and cooperation with the Myanmar Armed Forces (Tatmadaw). The European Union is also withholding direct financial assistance to the Myanmar government and freezing all aid that could be perceived as legitimising the junta. The EU reiterates its strongest condemnation of actions taken by the Myanmar military since the 1 February 2021 coup d'état and calls for an end to all forms of violence and the release of all arbitrarily detained prisoners. The EU stands ready to impose additional restrictive measures targeting those responsible for serious human rights violations and will continue ensuring these measures remain targeted and do not harm Myanmar's population.
