TITLE: Bank of Uganda and International Fund for Agricultural Development Launch Interactive Remittance Dashboard BODY: On 1 April 2026, the Bank of Uganda (BoU) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) launched an interactive remittance dashboard providing detailed, publicly accessible data on Uganda's remittance market. The initiative addresses a significant information gap by offering transaction-based reporting from financial institutions rather than relying on migration estimates or survey data. The dashboard provides comprehensive information on remittance inflows and outflows, including transaction values and volumes, sending and receiving countries, transfer channels, termination methods, and demographic distribution across Uganda's districts. In 2025, remittance inflows reached US$2.5 billion, equivalent to approximately 3.8 percent of GDP. Data collected under the new reporting framework recorded more than 16 million remittance transactions in 2025, with an average transaction size of US$152. Over 93 percent of transfers were below US$499, reflecting remittances' role in supporting household expenses including food, education and healthcare. The United States remains the largest sending country, accounting for US$702 million (28 percent of total inflows), followed by Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Canada. Digital channels dominate remittance transfers, accounting for 73 percent of inflows, with mobile money representing the most widely used digital channel at nearly 61 percent of remittance receipts. Uganda recorded remittance outflows of US$402 million in 2025, with primary destinations including India, Kenya, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. The dashboard will be updated monthly and is accessible through RemitSCOPE.org, the IFAD and Financing Facility for Remittances platform. The dashboard was developed with technical support from IFAD through the Platform for Remittances, Investment and Migrants' Entrepreneurship in Africa (PRIME Africa) programme, co-funded by the European Union. The initiative forms part of the National Remittance Stakeholder Network, which convenes regulators, industry players and development partners to advance Uganda's remittance ecosystem.
