TITLE: Canadian Securities Administrators Launches Tokenization Initiative for Capital Markets

On March 31, 2026, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) launched Project Tokenization, an initiative to examine the potential for tokenized financial products in Canada's capital markets. Tokenization refers to the use of distributed ledger technology for the creation, issuance, or representation of assets.
Project Tokenization, operating within the CSA Collaboratory, will explore how tokenization intersects with Canadian securities laws and support coordinated regulatory responses to this market innovation. The CSA recognises that globally, tokenized products are being developed and launched by financial institutions, asset managers, issuers, market infrastructure providers, and technology developers. Central banks and regulators worldwide are similarly exploring ways to support innovation while protecting investors and safeguarding financial stability.
The initial phase of Project Tokenization will explore the opportunities and risks of tokenization through stakeholder engagement, issue mapping, and targeted research. Subsequent phases could include a discussion paper or potentially the live testing of tokenized financial instruments and infrastructure within the CSA Collaboratory.
The CSA is inviting fintechs, issuers, financial institutions, developers, transfer agents, custodians, marketplaces, clearing agencies and houses, service providers, legal and accounting professionals, academics, and other interested stakeholders to participate in regulatory workshops. Two workshops are scheduled: the Calgary workshop on Thursday, April 9, 2026, and the Toronto workshop on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Interested parties can register for the Calgary event or express interest in attending the Toronto event through the CSA's website. These workshops will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to engage directly with the CSA on Project Tokenization and contribute to regulatory understanding as tokenization evolves in Canadian capital markets.
