TITLE: Canadian Securities Administrators Launches Tokenization Initiative and Invites Stakeholder Participation

On March 31, 2026, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) launched Project Tokenization, an initiative to examine the potential for tokenized financial products in Canada's capital markets. Tokenization refers to the use of distributed ledger technology for the creation, issuance, or representation of assets. The CSA is inviting interested stakeholders, including fintechs, financial institutions, issuers, asset managers, technology developers, transfer agents, custodians, clearing agencies, legal and accounting professionals, and academics to participate in regulatory workshops.
Project Tokenization operates within the CSA Collaboratory, a dedicated space for regulators and innovators to collaborate on evolving capital market concepts. The initiative aims to examine how tokenization technology intersects with Canada's securities laws and to support informed, coordinated regulatory responses. The CSA recognises that tokenized products are being developed and launched globally by a broad range of market participants, and that central banks and regulators are exploring ways to support innovation while protecting investors and safeguarding financial stability. The initial phase will explore opportunities and risks through stakeholder engagement, issue mapping, and targeted research. Subsequent phases could include a discussion paper or live testing of tokenized financial instruments and infrastructure within the CSA Collaboratory.
The CSA is hosting two regulatory workshops to facilitate stakeholder participation. The Calgary workshop takes place on Thursday, April 9, 2026, with registration available online. The Toronto workshop is scheduled for Thursday, June 11, 2026, with stakeholders able to express their interest in attending. These workshops represent the entry point for market participants to connect with CSA members and provide feedback on tokenization concepts and business models.
