TITLE: India's Reserve Bank Imposes Monetary Penalty on Airtel Payments Bank for Disclosure Non-Compliance BODY: On March 30, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a monetary penalty of ₹31.80 lakh on Airtel Payments Bank Limited for non-compliance with RBI directions on disclosure in financial statements. The penalty was imposed under section 47A(1)(c) read with section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The enforcement action followed a Statutory Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation conducted by RBI with reference to the bank's financial position as of March 31, 2025. RBI supervisory findings identified non-compliance with RBI directions on disclosure requirements. Following the inspection, RBI issued a notice to the bank requiring it to show cause why a penalty should not be imposed. After considering the bank's response, additional submissions, and oral submissions during a personal hearing, RBI determined that the bank had failed to disclose certain complaints in its annual financial statements for the financial year 2024-25, sustaining the charge and warranting the monetary penalty. RBI stated that the action is based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers. The imposition of the monetary penalty is without prejudice to any other action that may be initiated by RBI against the bank.
