TITLE: Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission Fines Lara Venue for Trading Hours Breach
BODY:
On Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) issued a AUD$15,000 fine to Lara Sporting Club for operating poker machines outside permitted trading hours.
Gaming activity was detected at the venue on May 18, 2025, outside liquor licence hours, with multiple poker machines in use and turnover exceeding AUD$10,000. Under the Gambling Regulation Act (2003), venues must operate gaming rooms within specific hours, including adherence to a mandatory shutdown period between 4:00 am and 10:00 am daily. Permitted gaming hours must align with liquor trading hours defined in each venue's liquor licence. Lara Sporting Club's permitted hours are Monday to Saturday any time, and on Sundays between midnight and 1:00 am, and between 10:00 am and 11:30 pm, excluding ANZAC Day.
This represents the second trading hours breach by the venue. The VGCCC previously fined Lara Sporting Club AUD$10,000 in 2025 for breaches on Good Friday. VGCCC Chief Executive Suzy Neilan stated the penalty reflects the seriousness of the conduct and the need for specific and general deterrence, emphasising that venues must abide by licensed hours to safeguard patrons and minimise gambling harm.
The VGCCC is encouraging all venues to verify their licensed hours ahead of restricted trading days, including Good Friday and ANZAC Day. Last year, 11 venues were fined a combined AUD$180,000 for trading hours breaches relating to these dates.
Individuals with concerns about gambling provider behaviour can lodge complaints with the VGCCC. Support is available via the Gambler's Helpline on 1800 858 858 (24/7, free and confidential).
